Here’s a clear guide on how to recover deleted WhatsApp chats easily, depending on whether you use Google Drive (Android), iCloud (iPhone), or local backups.
🔹 1. Recover from Cloud Backup
WhatsApp automatically backs up your chats daily (if enabled).
On Android (Google Drive backup):
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Open the app and verify your phone number.
- When prompted, tap Restore to recover chats from Google Drive.
- After restoration, tap Next → your chats will appear, then media will follow.
On iPhone (iCloud backup):
- Check if a backup exists:
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups.
- Delete and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Verify your number, then tap Restore Chat History when prompted.
🔹 2. Recover from Local Backup (Android only)
WhatsApp stores local backups on your device.
- Open File Manager → go to
WhatsApp > Databases. - Find files like
msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14. - Rename the file you want to restore to
msgstore.db.crypt14. - Reinstall WhatsApp → verify your number → tap Restore.
⚠️ Local backups are only kept for 7 days.
🔹 3. If You Didn’t Back Up
- Unfortunately, WhatsApp cannot restore chats if no backup exists.
- You can try third-party data recovery tools (e.g., Dr.Fone, iMobie PhoneRescue, Tenorshare UltData).
- Success isn’t guaranteed, and some tools require rooting/jailbreaking.
✅ Pro Tip: To avoid losing chats again:
- Enable auto-backup in Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- For Android: choose Google Drive.
- For iPhone: enable iCloud Backup.
